National Board of Physicians and Surgeons (NBPAS) 3:03 AM (9 hours ago) to me View newsletter in browser THE MONTHLY DOSE ———— August 2026 ———— Insights, advocacy, and updates from NBPAS Advocacy Updates A Major Step Forward for Florida Physicians The Florida Boards of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine have approved NBPAS as a Recognizing Agency The National Board of Physicians and Surgeons (NBPAS) is excited to share an important development for Florida physicians and patients. On August 7, 2026, the Florida Board of Medicine voted to approve NBPAS as a recognizing agency under the state’s physician advertising rule. On August 21, 2026, the Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine reached the same conclusion, also voting in favor of adding NBPAS for the purposes of advertising as board certified. The Boards reached these conclusions through an evaluation process provided under Florida law, which recognizes that agency rules can have unintended consequences and permits a waiver when: The purpose of the rule has been achieved by other means; and, Applying the rule literally would create substantial harm; and/or Applying the rule literally would violate principles of fairness. Through their analyses, both Boards recognized that NBPAS physicians had already completed the foundational training and rigorous specialty examination required to establish the required specialty expertise, in addition to meeting the statutory criteria for a rule waiver. These decisions are significant milestones and advance competitive alternatives for physician lifelong learning while helping highly experienced NBPAS physicians remain in practice and caring for patients. They also will allow NBPAS-certified physicians to truthfully advertise an earned, terminal, board certification credential. As NBPAS President and Founder Paul Teirstein, MD, noted, the decisions demonstrate that “physician choice, competition, and high standards are not mutually exclusive.” For Florida physicians, and any physicians licensed in Florida through interstate licensing, please stay tuned. There may be important upcoming opportunities to submit written comments and provide in-person testimony before both the Florida medical boards as they finalize rule language. Physician participation will be critical in helping ensure these decisions translate into meaningful choice, increased competition, truthful advertising, and improved access to care for Florida patients. Finally, please note, the formal rulemaking process is not yet complete. NBPAS-certified physicians should not advertise themselves as “board certified” until the rulemaking has concluded. NBPAS will keep everyone informed as the process moves forward. Read NBPAS’ Press Release: https://nbpas.org/blogs/featured-news/florida-board-of-medicine-approves-nbpas-as-a-recognizing-agency From the NBPAS Desk NBPAS Competitors Issue Misleading and Disappointing Responses Following Florida’s Medical Board decisions, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) suggested that NBPAS lacks adequate assessment protocols, and that the Medical Board’s decision was only possible by, “exempting NBPAS from a critical requirement in the existing rule.” The American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS) claimed that the decision undermined “meaningful standards.” Both organizations omitted the central fact that entirely negates their arguments: NBPAS-certified physicians were already trained, tested, and designated as board certified specialists. As the NBPAS community knows, all NBPAS-certified physicians completed accredited residency and/or fellowship training and passed gold-standard specialty board examinations. They remain licensed, complete specialty-relevant CME, undergo hospital credentialing and peer oversight, and remain accountable to state medical boards, patients, and the public. Describing NBPAS-certified physicians as unassessed or suggesting that the Boards of Medicine erred by exempting NBPAS physicians from ‘critical requirements’ are not technical disagreements. These statements are attempts to ignore residency training, board examinations, years or decades of clinical experience, and every other system through which physicians remain accountable. These statements create the impression that Florida opened the door to untrained, unqualified, or untruthful physicians. These statements are false. NBPAS has always acted with integrity when responding to mis- and dis-information. However, we will not allow organizations to frighten patients, mislead decision-makers, or disparage NBPAS-certified physicians without correction or redress. The facts remain the same. Forced, paid compliance is not competence. Physician quality is demonstrated through training, examination, experience, licensure, continuing education, and patient care—not by whether a private organization receives another fee. A late fee is not a quality metric. An open-book module is not patient care. And losing access to a verification database because of nonpayment or competitive choice does not make a physician less capable the next morning. The Florida medical boards examined the facts and approved NBPAS’ waiver. That is not an example of disregarding the law. It is an example of using the law, exactly as written, for its intended purpose. NBPAS is proud to stand with Florida’s physicians, and with Florida, in defending physician freedom, fair competition, and patient access to care. We also came together for our ICWA Advisory, continuing the important work of listening, learning and strengthening our partnerships to better serve Tribal children and families. We are reaching out to all ODHS Districts, Community Partners and the Nine Tribes in Oregon to sponsor a basket and/or a bundle for the annual raffle. Bundles are significant within many different Tribes, including the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. CTUIR Whipman, Andrew Wildbill, shared “Bundles are something we put away to be ready for ceremony. Often required to pay ceremonial services, to honor people respectfully. It’s a cultural transaction, out of respect and love for each other.” The attached flier has all the details on how you can get involved and contribute. However, given Tara's knowledge of CPS casework, active efforts, and the spirit of ICWA made her a natural fit to train all incoming ICWA CPS workers. 3 out of the 4 current ICWA CPS workers were trained under Tara's thoughtful and diligent guidance. Tara recognizes the importance of trauma informed approaches to CPS work in general and the extra care and thorough efforts necessary when working with Native families given the generational trauma our agency has historically inflicted. Tara is patient, kind, and has built and maintained good working relationships with Oregon Tribes. She partners with the regional ICWA specialist to help train new CPS workers on best practice on ICWA cases and keeps native families at the forefront of her work. Expand Your Knowledge on ICWA/ORICWA The Indian Child Welfare Act Educational Resource Video, produced by the Native American Rights Fund, explains why Congress enacted ICWA in 1978 and why the law remains essential. The video describes the long history of government policies and child welfare practices that separated Native children from their families, Tribes, cultures and communities. Before ICWA, Native children were removed from their homes at alarmingly high rates and were frequently placed in non-Native foster or adoptive homes, even when relatives or Tribal members were available. The video emphasizes that ICWA is not simply a placement law. It recognizes the sovereign authority of Tribal Nations and protects the collective interests of Native children, families and Tribes. ICWA requires meaningful Tribal involvement, efforts to prevent unnecessary family separation and placement practices that preserve children’s relationships with their extended families, Tribes, communities, and cultures. Ultimately, the video demonstrates that maintaining these connections is central to a Native child’s identity, belonging and long-term well-being. After listening, take time to reflect and discuss the video with your co-workers, supervisor, manager or a member of the Office of Tribal Affairs. Consider these questions to guide your discussion: What information in the video stood out to you or challenged something you previously understood about ICWA? How does ICWA recognize and protect Tribal sovereignty? Why should connection to family, Tribe, culture and community be considered part of a child’s safety and well-being? What does meaningful partnership with a child’s Tribe look like in practice? What is one action you can take to continue learning about Tribal history, Tribal sovereignty, ICWA/ORICWA or current issues impacting Tribal Nations? For support, reach out to your Regional ICWA Specialist or ICWA Consultant. Visit the Tribal Affairs ICWA OWL page for more tools and resources to support your ICWA/ORICWA practice. eqifax EQUIFAX AND ALL CREDIT REPORTING AGENCYS isis eptionan Mon, Feb 24, 2020, 10:31 AM to me Welcome To The Equifax Data Breach Settlement Website Important Update: The Settlement received final approval from the Court on January 13, 2020. You may review the Final Approval Order and Final Order and Judgment by clicking here. The Court gave final approval to the Settlement and overruled all objections on January 13, 2020. However, some of those that objected to the Settlement have now appealed the Court’s decision to approve the Settlement. By order of the Court, the Settlement cannot become final until all appeals are resolved and there is currently no timeline for the resolution of these appeals. Please check back for further updates. In September of 2017, Equifax announced it experienced a data breach, which impacted the personal information of approximately 147 million people. A federal court approved a class action Settlement that resolves lawsuits brought by consumers after the data breach. Equifax denied any wrongdoing and no judgment or finding of wrongdoing was made. If you are a class member, the deadline to file Initial Claims Period claim(s) for free credit monitoring or up to $125 cash payment and other cash reimbursement passed on January 22, 2020. Please note that no Settlement benefits will be distributed or available until the Settlement becomes effective. The Settlement will become effective after all appeals have been resolved in favor of the Settlement. If you requested a cash benefit during the Initial Claims Period, the amount you receive may be significantly reduced depending on how many valid claims are submitted by other class members. Based on the number of potentially valid claims that have been submitted to date, payments for time spent and alternative compensation of up to $125 likely will be substantially lowered and will be distributed on a proportional basis if the Settlement becomes effective. Depending on the number of valid claims filed, the amount you receive may be a small percentage of your initial claim. Extended Claims Period Claims If you were impacted by the Equifax data breach, you may seek reimbursement for valid Out of Pocket losses or Time Spent (excluding losses of money and time associated with freezing or unfreezing credit reports or purchasing credit monitoring or identity theft protection) incurred during the Extended Claims Period if you have not received reimbursement for the claimed loss through other means. To be eligible, your claim for Out-of-Pocket Losses or Time Spent must occur between January 23, 2020 and January 22, 2024 (the “Extended Claims Period”). FILE AN EXTENDED CLAIMS PERIOD CLAIM TODAY During the Extended Claims Period, impacted class members may submit claim(s) for cash reimbursement. You may be eligible for the following reimbursement cash payments for: Time Spent during the Extended Claims Period recovering from fraud, identity theft, or other misuse of your personal information caused by the data breach up to 20 total hours at $25 per hour. Out-of-Pocket Losses during the Extended Claims Period resulting from the data breach up to $20,000. In order to submit a claim for Time Spent or Out-of-Pocket Losses during the Extended Claims Period, you must certify that you have not received reimbursement for the claimed loss through other means. Free Identity Restoration Services: When the Settlement becomes effective, you will be eligible for at least 7 years of free assisted identity restoration services to help you remedy the effects of identity theft and fraud. FIND OUT IF YOUR INFORMATION WAS IMPACTED If so, you may be eligible to file an Extended Claims Period claim. Your Legal Rights and Options

PRAC Joins National Fraud Detection Center to Strengthen Governmentwide Antifraud Efforts Inbox Pandemic Response Accountability Committee Unsubscribe Tue, Aug 25, 12:59 PM (3 days ago) to me Press Release PandemicOversight.gov PRAC Joins National Fraud Detection Center to Strengthen Governmentwide Antifraud Efforts 08/25/2026 The Pandemic Response Accountability Committee (PRAC) is partnering with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) as an inaugural member of the new National Fraud Detection Center (NFDC), a multi-agency effort to identify and investigate fraud across taxpayer-funded programs. The partnership builds on years of collaboration between the PRAC and DOJ to combat fraud. As a member of DOJ’s COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement Task Force, the PRAC used its data and advanced analytics capabilities to identify potential pandemic related fraud and support investigations. “The PRAC is focused on adding value to the oversight community by leveraging data and advanced methodologies to identify patterns, trends, anomalies, and connections that are indicative of potential fraud schemes,” said PRAC Executive Director Ken Dieffenbach. “We look forward to continuing our long-standing support of DOJ efforts to address fraud risks across federal programs.” As part of the NFDC, the PRAC will continue bringing its data and analytical capabilities to this partnership, working alongside DOJ, Inspectors General, law enforcement agencies, and other government partners to identify fraud risks that cross program and agency boundaries. Read the DOJ announcement on the launch of the NFDC. The PRAC promotes transparency and supports oversight of the funds provided by the CARES Act, other emergency coronavirus-related spending bills, and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. In addition to its coordination and oversight responsibilities, the PRAC is tasked with supporting efforts to “prevent and detect fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement [and] mitigate major risks that cut across program and agency boundaries.” Having trouble viewing this email? The OIG conducted a national review to assess how Veterans Health Administration (VHA) mental health residential rehabilitation treatment programs (MH RRTPs) address the unique environmental and safety needs of women veterans. The review was initiated in April 2024 and concluded in February 2026. This review included individual telephone surveys of 112 women veterans recently discharged from MH RRTPs; on-site inspections of a representative statistical sample of 32 MH RRTP sites (43 individual MH RRTP programs or units); and interviews with 128 VHA MH RRTP managers, admission coordinators, and facility women veteran program managers. MH RRTPs provide a 24/7 structured therapeutic care environment and serve patients who need more support than outpatient mental health services offer, but do not require acute inpatient mental health treatment. VHA Directive 1330.01(7), Health Care Services for Women Veterans, specifies that the unique environmental and safety needs of women veterans must be addressed to ensure the care environment is a secure and healing one. In fiscal year 2025 (October 1, 2024–September 30, 2025), approximately 2,300 women veterans utilized MH RRTPs. The information provided in this report is intended to support VHA’s improvements and continuing efforts to support women veterans in MH RRTPs. The OIG made no recommendations.
